Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) has postponed today's pre-announced protest rally in Aminbazar, alleging that law enforcers vandalised the stage set up at the venue.
Abu Ashfaque, convener of Dhaka district BNP, confirmed the matter.
Ashfaque said, "We went to the office of the superintendent of police in the morning. He [SP] told us that Awami League men also wanted to hold a rally at the same venue, so they [police] will not allow us to do the programme [there]."
Ashfaque said “We obtained permission to hold the rally four days ago. But our stage has been vandalised, so we have called a meeting at the party office in the capital around 3:00pm today.”
He also claimed that police demolished our stage last night. We made this stage and we would have moved it.
He further said why will the police break it?
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime, Traffic and Ops) of Dhaka District Police Abdullahel Kafi said the allegation against the police of vandalising the BNP stage was not true.
He also claimed there was no permission for BNP's rally
Awami League men also wanted to hold a rally at the same venue. So we have deployed additional police in the area to avoid any untoward incident, he added.
BNP planned to hold the rally from 2:30pm on today as part of their 15-day programme to press home their demand for holding the upcoming general election under a non-partisan caretaker government.
However, the other pre-announced rally of BNP, scheduled to be held at Dholaikhal in Dhaka at 3:00pm on today.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is scheduled to address the Dholaikhal rally as the chief guest.
