The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday (October 12) sentenced Dinajpur Municipality mayor Syed Jahangir Alam to one month in jail for making derogatory remarks about one of its judges.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan issued the order on Thursday (October 12).
Besides, the court fined the mayor Tk 1 lakh and asked him to surrender in a Dinajpur court within seven weeks.
He will be arrested if he fails to surrender within the mentioned period, the Chief Justice added.
On 2 August, a Dhaka court sentenced BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to nine years in jail and his wife Zubaida Rahman to three years in a case. Later, Dinajpur Municipality Mayor Syed Jahangir Alam made indecent comments about an Appellate Division judge over the verdict.
Earlier on August 17, a six-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique asked the mayor to explain his role after appearing before the court on August 24.
The court also asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission to remove the video containing the remarks of the mayor Jahangir, from the internet.
