US to review all violent incidents for visa restrictions

The United States has condemned the political violence that took place in Dhaka on Saturday (October 28), saying that it will be "reviewing all violent incidents for possible visa restrictions".

The US embassy in Dhaka said this in a statement following incidents centring the rallies held by ruling Awami League and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

“The reported killing of a police officer, a political activist, and the burning of a hospital are unacceptable. As is violence against civilians, including journalists,” Donald Lu, assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian Affairs said in the statement.

“We call for calm and restraint on all sides. We will be reviewing all violent incidents for possible visa restrictions,” he added.

On Saturday, three major political parties including the ruling Awami League, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami staged rallies in the capital. The programmes were marred by clashes between the members of the political parties and law enforcement agencies including the police, leaving at least two people dead and many injured.
