A Dhaka court today (November 22) rejected the bail petition of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case filed over the vandalism of the chief justice's residence during the BNP-police clash on October 28.

Acting judge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judges Court Faisal Atiq Bin Quader turned down the bail plea and sent him to jail.

Earlier on October 29, Mirza Fakhrul landed in jail.

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Police detained Fakhrul from his Gulshan residence in the capital on October 29.

On October 28, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir suspended the grand rally in the capital's Nayapaltan and announced the hartal.

BNP claimed that the rally was suspended as police fired rubber bullets, flash grenades and lobbed tear gas shells, forcing the BNP leaders and activists to leave the rally venue.

BNP, Jamaat and like-minded parties observed the dawn to dusk countrywide hartal on October 29 in protest of the police action during the party's Nayapaltan rally.
