BNP, allies’ countrywide hartal underway 

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)and its alliance partners is observing a dawn-to-dusk hartal today, demanding the cancellation of the 12th general election schedule and resignation of the Awami League government by handing over power to a poll-time, party-neutral caretaker government.

The hartal, enforced across the country from 6:00am to 6:00pm today (November 30), follows without break a 24-hour blockade ended at 6:00am today.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a virtual press conference on Wednesday late afternoon urged the people including the leaders and activists of the BNP and other opposition parties to make the blockade and hartal a success.

Earlier on Monday, the BNP and its alliance partners announced the two-day programme, after observing blockades in seven phases to oust the government.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Ganatantra Mancha, Liberal Democratic Party, Gono Odhikar Parishad, AB Party and other parties in the ongoing anti-government simultaneous movement are observing the same agitation programmes.

Wednesday’s was the 8th phase of nationwide blockade on roads, rails, and waterways in which BNP, its associate bodies and other parties held rallies and processions across the country.

Meanwhile, the police reported a crude bomb explosion in Paltan area in the capital leaving two people injured, while in Shantinagar, area two youths were wounded in another crude bomb explosion on Tuesday night.

Two people, including a Swechhasebak League activist, were injured in crude bomb blasts in the capital’s Bijoynagar area during the blockade on Wednesday afternoon.

The injured were Swechhasebak League Dhaka city south unit member Abul Taher Bhuiyan and AK Azad, manager of a printing press in the Kakrail area.

So far, 229 vehicles have been torched during the blockades and general strikes since October 28 till November 29, according to fire service headquarters.
