The High Court (HC) today fixed Thursday (December 7) for hearing a bail petition filed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case over vandalising chief justice's residence during the party rally on 28 October.
A bench of Justice Md Selim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin set the date as Advocate Sagir Hossain Leon filed the bail petition on behalf of Fakhrul with the concerned bench of the High Court on Sunday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court rejected the bail petition of the BNP secretary general in the same case on November 22.
On October 29, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj in a case filed over the vandalism of the chief justice's residence during BNP-police clash in the capital on October 28.
The Detective Branch (DB) of police detained Fakhrul from his Gulshan residence around 9:30am on October 29.
On October 28, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir suspended the grand rally in the capital's Nayapaltan and announced the hartal.
BNP claimed that the rally was suspended as police fired rubber bullets, flash grenades and lobbed tear gas shells, forcing the BNP leaders and activists to leave the rally venue.
BNP, Jamaat and like-minded parties observed the dawn to dusk countrywide hartal on October 29 in protest of the recent police action during the party's Nayapaltan rally.
Earlier on October 29, the BNP and Jamaat announced nationwide blockades for three days starting 31 October to press home their one-point demand of immediate resignation of the ruling government.
