The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (January 2) rejected a petition filed by independent candidate Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah seeking the revival of his candidacy for the Barisal-5 constituency.
A bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order.
Earlier on December 19, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division stayed the High Court verdict that declared the candidature of Sadiq Abdullah of the Barisal-5 constituency valid.
The Election Commission cancelled the candidacy of Sadiq Abdullah, also former Barisal mayor, over dual citizenship on December 6 last year.
Sadiq Abdullah sought the Awami League nomination for the seat, but Zaheed Farooque, the current Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Water Resources, secured the party's nomination.
