At least seven people were injured in a clash between the supporters of Awami League-nominated candidate Golam Dastagir Gazi and independent aspirant Md Shahjahan Bhuiyan during the general election in Rupganj of Narayanganj Sunday.
Gazi is vying for the Narayanganj-1 constituency with “Boat” symbol and Shahjahan, also a local Awami League leader, with “Kettle” symbol.
Locals said supporters of the ruling party-backed contender beat up Akter Hossain, 30, as he cast his ballot for the “Kettle” symbol. The incident took place within 50 feet of the Uttar Khoishair Government Primary School centre around 11am.
This incident heated the situation. As the members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) appeared at the scene, the supporters of Gazi left the spot.
Around 12:15pm, Gazi’s men barred a voter from casting his vote, which triggered a clash between the two sides, leaving at least seven supporters of Shahjahan injured.
Although the police brought the situation under control, a tense situation was still prevailing there.
