BNP demands fresh election under non-party govt

BNP today (January 8) demanded a fresh election under a non-party interim government to restore public trust in the democratic process and establish a legitimate and accountable government.

At a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office, the party also called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

To mobilize public support for their demands, the BNP announced a two-day nationwide mass contact program, including rallies in major cities on Tuesday and Wednesday.

BNP Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan said people of the country unilaterally and spontaneously rejected Sunday’s election.

"On behalf of 63 parties, who called for boycotting the polls, we congratulate the people of the country for turning down the election,” he said.

Moyeen Khan also said the government failed to take voters to the polling stations despite various threats and intimidation.

“There was no voting and election on January 7. What happened was vote robbery and vote rigging,” he added.

Another BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said their party wanted to establish a government elected by people’s vote and accountable to them.

People have turned down this election, he said, adding everyone is saying the voter turnout which was shown (by the EC) was fake.
