Decision on Khaleda’s overseas treatment today

The government will decide on the extension of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's release period as well as the application for her overseas treatment today (March 19).

Law Minister Anisul Huq said this to reporters at his secretariat office on Monday.

The minister’s response came after the family of Khaleda re-applied to the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking her treatment abroad on March 6.

In response to a query regarding the application of Khaleda’s treatment abroad Anisul Huq said, “The family said they want Zia’s permanent release. I didn’t get the meaning of permanent release. They have applied I will read the file carefully and then will settle by Monday.”

“However, I can tell that there will be no change in the decision regarding her treatment in abroad,” he said.

Khaleda Zia's punishment sentence was extended for the eight consecutive times on two conditions that she will receive treatment from her home in Dhaka and during this time she will not be able to go outside the country.

Khaleda's younger brother Shamim Iskander applied to the ministry on behalf of the family on March 6.

Earlier, on 12 September, the home ministry issued a notification extending the suspension of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's jail term by another six months, for the eight times.

Khaleda, a 78-year-old former prime minister, has long been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, heart, eye problems and post-Covid complications.
