Journalist Nadim murder: Prime accused Babu freed on bail

Mahmudul Alam alias Babu, prime accused of Jamalpur journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim murder case was freed on bail.

After one year of his arrest, the suspended chairman of Sadhurpara Union Parishad was released on bail at about 5:30pm on Wednesday (July 10) from Jamalpur District Jail.

According to court and prison sources, the High Court did not grant bail to Mahmudul Alam, also known as Babu, the main suspect in the Nadim murder case, on May 8.

However, the High Court issued an order asking the government to explain within two weeks why he should not be granted bail. Following the final hearing on June 30, the High Court granted him bail.

Abu Fattah, the jailor of Jamalpur District Jail, said they received the High Court order on Wednesday to release the accused on bail. He was freed in the afternoon. The High Court granted him bail until the final report of the case is submitted.

The victim, Golam Rabbani Nadim, was the Jamalpur correspondent for the online news portal 'banglanews24.com' and the Bakshiganj upazila correspondent for Ekattor Television. He was also a member of the Jamalpur Press Club.

Nadim was critically injured in an attack allegedly carried out by supporters of Babu in the Pathati area of Bakshiganj upazila on the night of June 14. He passed away at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital the following day.

A case was lodged against 22 people naming now-suspended Sadhurpara Union Parishad (UP) chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu as the key accused in connection with Nadim's murder on June 17.
