The High Court (HC) today (Sept 5) ordered authorities concerned to exhume the body of BNP leader Haris Chowdhury and conduct a DNA test for identity confirmation.
A bench comprised of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Mahbubul Islam issued the order in response to an application from Haris Chowdhury’s daughter Barrister Samira Tanjin.
HC issued this order to Director of Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Lawyer Mahdin Chowdhury was in favour of the application in the court. Redwan Ahmed Ranjeeb and Assistant Attorney General Mujahidul Islam Shaheen appeared for the state.
On January 11, 2022, various media outlets circulated reports on Harris's death after his cousin Ashiq Chowdhury in a Facebook post claimed that the BNP leader passed away at a hospital in the UK three and a half months ago, and was buried there.
Quoting his daughter, some media outlets reported that Harris died of post Covid-19 complications in a Dhaka hospital and was buried in the capital.
Samira Tanjin said, “The previous intelligence department officials of Hasnia government questioned father's death by writing a play. The media writes about death of my father.”
“To clear all the misunderstandings I filed a writ. Thanks to HC for accepting and issuing order against my writ,” she added.
