Home Affairs Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the government aims to complete all preparations for the upcoming national elections by December, though the Election Commission will determine the final date.
He said, “Our goal is to complete election preparations by December...The Election Commission will announce the election date, but we want to ensure everything is ready beforehand. A training programme will be launched here [at the police facility] as part of that effort.”
The adviser made the remarks on Saturday (12 July) while speaking to reporters after visiting the Dhaka District Police Line, Range Reserve Force (RRF), and Traffic and Driving School (TDS) at Mill Barracks in Old Dhaka.
Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam and other senior officials were also present.
Commenting on recent incidents of violence and unrest, including the high-profile murder of scrap trader Sohag near Dhaka’s Mitford Hospital, Jahangir Alam described the killing as “tragic” and said five suspects have already been apprehended.
“Detective Branch members are actively pursuing leads to arrest the remaining suspects,” he added. “This is a very sad incident. I urge everyone to cooperate in maintaining peace and justice.”
Responding to public criticism over the delayed police response during Sohag’s murder, which reportedly lasted nearly an hour, he stated, “We took immediate action. With public cooperation, nothing is impossible.”
When asked whether the broader law and order situation has deteriorated, the advisor rejected the notion, citing recent quick responses to criminal incidents. These included arrests in a Chandpur extortion case and action taken after a hoax bomb threat on a flight bound for Kathmandu.
“Immediate actions are being taken in every incident. We have arrested those responsible in each case,” he said.
Jahangir Alam also expressed concern over increasing societal intolerance. “People are becoming too reactive. Minor incidents quickly escalate. Citizens from all walks of life must work together to restore calm and reason.”
