Nationalist Citizen Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, have rejected draft of the July Charter prepared by the National Consensus Committee calling lack of consensus in the decision-making process.
The reactions came during the 21st day of the second phase of the ongoing political dialogue held Tuesday (July 29) at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Speaking to reporters during a break, NCP Joint Convenor Javed Raseen said the draft was published without prior discussion on the six proposed decision-making procedures, which makes the move unacceptable to his party.
“We strongly oppose this. The process of discussion itself has not been discussed. Suddenly publishing a draft is completely unacceptable to us,” he said.
He further said that legal frameworks must be established before the next general election based on the issues where consensus has already been reached among political parties.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher also voiced his party’s disapproval of the draft.
He reiterated Jamaat’s demand for the next national election to be held under a non-party caretaker government, a position he said most parties support.
However, Jamaat is preparing its own draft of a charter, which will be submitted to the commission, Taher said.
“This draft is incomplete and some parts are even dangerous. If finalised in its current form, we cannot accept it,” he added.
He warned that unless the dialogue becomes realistic and effective, the country’s political future could face serious uncertainty.
