The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) early Thursday arrested a ward-level Jubo League leader in connection with the fatal shooting of student Nadimul Haque Elem during the July 2024 anti-discrimination student movement.
The arrestee, Sarwar Hossain Swapan, president of Ward No. 43 Jubo League under the Dhaka South City unit, is one of the prime accused in the murder case. A CID team apprehended him from his rented residence in the Alif Lam Mim Complex in the capital’s Babubazar area around 1:48am.
Jasim Uddin Khan, Special Superintendent of Police (Media) at CID Dhaka, confirmed the arrest.
On July 19 last year, Elem, a former student of Sheikh Borhan Uddin College and an active participant in the anti-discrimination movement, was gunned down in Patla Khan Lane near the Kabi Nazrul Government College intersection in Old Dhaka.
Two separate cases were filed over the incident. On August 24, 2024, Md Shamsul Alam Arefin, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, lodged the first murder case at Sutrapur Police Station under multiple sections of the Penal Code, including 302 and 109.
Later, on September 1, Elem’s mother Ismat Ara filed a second case naming 89 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, alleging conspiracy and direct involvement.
The case is currently being investigated by the CID Dhaka Metro (South) Division. Authorities say further arrests may follow based on ongoing investigations and forensic analysis.
