The body of eminent writer, researcher, and leftist intellectual Badruddin Umar will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar at 10:00 am tomorrow (Monday) to allow people from all walks of life to pay their last respects.

Confirming the matter, Jatiya Mukti Council General Secretary Faizul Hakim said Umar’s body has already been brought to his residence. His eldest daughter, now abroad, is expected to return home soon.

Following her arrival, Umar’s first namaz-e-janaza will be held after Zuhr prayers at the Central Jame Mosque of Dhaka University. He will later be buried at Jurain Graveyard in the capital.

Badruddin Umar passed away at the age of 94 at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka at 10:05 am today after prolonged suffering from old-age complications.

“He was admitted to the hospital on July 22 with shortness of breath and low blood pressure. After 10 days of treatment, he was discharged last week, but his condition deteriorated again,” Faizul Hakim said in a statement.

Born on December 20, 1931, in Bardhaman, India, Umar was the son of Abul Hashim, a noted Muslim nationalist politician of the subcontinent.

A lifelong Marxist thinker, Umar began his career as a part-time lecturer at Dhaka University before founding the Department of Sociology at Rajshahi University. He also served as president of the Bangladesh Krishok Federation and as central coordinator of the Gonotantrik Biplobi Jote.

In 2003, he founded the Jatiya Mukti Council, where he served as president until his death.

Umar’s writings on nationalism, religion, and politics had a profound influence on Bangladesh’s liberation struggle. His notable works include Samprodayikota (1966), Sangskritir Sangkat (1967), and Sangskritik Samprodayikota (1969).
