DHAKA: Dhaka University teacher Syed Golam Mawla, the suspected coordinator for Bangladesh operations of the outlawed Islamist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir, was taken on three-day remand Friday for interrogation on terrorism charges.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Munshi Abdul Aziz granted the remand after police produced him before the court with seven days’ remand prayer.

Earlier on Thursday evening, Mawla was arrested from the city’s Katabon area in a case filed with Uttara Police Station under the anti-terrorism law.

Earlier on September 18, 2008, the university professor was also arrested from northwestern Rajshahi along with 10 others, including two other university teachers, for their suspected "militant links", intelligence sources said.

After the arrest of Mawla, Mahbubur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said professor Mawla was the chief coordinator of Hizb ut-Tahrir after its chief coordinator Prof Mohiuddin Ahmed was arrested on April 20.

Rapid Action Battalion on April 20 arrested the outfit`s second-in-command, Kazi Morshedul Haque, in Mohammadpur in Dhaka. Two activists of the outfit were arrested with bombs at Uttara in March.

The government imposed a ban on Hizb ut-Tahrir on October 22 last year for its anti-state and anti-democracy activities.

Defying the ban, the organisation has been carrying out their activities in different areas.
