BARISAL: Ruling Awami League candidate Jebunnessa Afroz won in by-election of Barisal-5 (Sadar) constituency with “Boat” symbol on Sunday. 

Jebunnessa, wife of late MP Shawkat Hossain Hiron, defeated Saiful Islam Liton backed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) with “Television” symbol.

Jebunnessa bagged 183,629 votes at 159 centres while her opposition Saiful Islam got only 6,136 votes.

Returning officer M Shahidul Alam confirmed the matter to banglanews.

There are total 342,228 voters where 170,967 are male and 171,262 are female.

The constituency became vacant as its lawmaker Hiron died on April 9.
