Bandarban blockade withdrawn

BANDARBAN: The 4-day road-waterway blockade called by Bangalee Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Nagorik Parishad has been withdrawn.

Earlier, it started in the district early Saturday protesting the visit of a team of International Commission on Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs (CHT) to the hill region.

The blockade was enforced by Hill Tracts Bangalee organizations, including Bangalee Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Nagorik Parishad.

Sources told banglanews that the blockade was called off as the convoy went back in spite of visiting hill tracts after being attacked by activists of Bangalee organisations in Rangamati.

Banglanews Rangamati correspondent reports that the alleged attack left two people, including an officer-in-charge of a police station, injured.

In this regard, Bangalee Chhatra Parishad Bandarban President Abdul Quaium said though the blockade was withdrawn but their activists would keep eyes on the gateways if the members of International Commission on Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs try to enter the hilly region.

Earlier, Hill Tracts Bangalee organizations declared the four-day road and waterway blockade from July 5 to 8 in protest against making hill region unrest.

Bangalee Chhatra Parishad Bandarban President Abdul Quaium alleged at that time that the International Commission on Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs is the reason of disturbance in hill tracts.

However, a delegation of the commission, led by its co-chair Sultana Kamal, tried to visit the hill region to learn about the latest situation and progress in the CHT peace accord and recent Babuchhara incident.

The delegation will also visit Ram Jadi and its adjacent area.
