‘WB stopped aid for BNP corruption’

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday categorically said the World Bank (WB) denied investing in power and communications sectors in Bangladesh due to corruption of BNP.

The premier, also ruling Awami League president, made the assertion while visiting communications ministry in the secretariat office of the city.

She said, “Without any reason, the delegation of WB canceled Padma Bridge Project on the last day of their visit to Bangladesh.”

A vested quarter along with some people of our country and America are liable for cancellation of the project, she added.

The delegation alleged that there is corruption in the project. “We took this as a challenge and told them to submit documents related to the allegation,” she said.

Alleging that for the corruption of BNP, the WB authorities cancelled the fund for power and communications sectors, the premier said vice-president of WB showed her a document of the project of Dhaka-Mymensingh Four-Lane that proved corruption committed in the BNP regime.

Expressing hope, that Padma Bridge Project would be a unit, she said, “We will finish the construction work in time because we are not dependent to anyone.”

Sheikh Hasina added: “As we made our country independent in 1971, now we can also construct the bridge as we have $ 21 billion foreign reserve money.”
