Militancy emerges as democracy in danger

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that militancy has emerged in the country as the natural process of practicing democracy has been stopped.

He commented on Saturday while visiting the ailing BNP standing committee member Dr RA Gani at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital at Shahbagh in city.

Fakhrul added that militancy has risen due to the activities of ruling Awami League.

According to him, Awami League has deprived people from their right to free speech.

Militancy also emerged during previous tenure of Awami League, he opined.

Responding to a question of Japan PM’s upcoming visit to Bangladesh, the BNP leader said, it is very important. This visit will play an important role in the development of Bangladesh’s socio-economic sector.

To another question, he said, BNP and its senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman believe in democracy.

We believe in the participation of all people in politics, he added.

Regarding Dr RA Gani’s physical condition, Fakhrul said, he is now better.

He will be active very soon, he hoped.

Earlier on Friday, Dr RA Gani got admitted at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital after suffering from heart attack.

The ailing BNP leader is under the supervision of noted cardiac specialist Dr MA Rashid.

According to the sources, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is also taking information about the condition of Gani regularly.
