Jamaat mulls 3-day hartal

DHAKA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is thinking to call 3-day countrywide hartal if Supreme Court in its verdict upholds death penalty to Delawar Hossain Sayedee.

The party may observe the program with a day break, its leaders, who went hiding, told banglanews over cell phone.

A five-member judge’s panel of the apex court led-by Chief Justice Mozammel Hossain is set to deliver verdict on the Wednesday morning on the appeals filed by Jamaat leader Sayedee against his death penalty for the 1971 wartime offences.

On February 28, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 awarded him capital punishment in two charges of wartime crimes.

The war crimes convict filed an appeal with the apex court seeking acquittal from the charges and the government side on the same day submitted a separate appeal to the SC demanding capital punishment in all the eight charges.
