DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami called countrywide hartal for Thursday and Sunday in two phases protesting Supreme Court verdict that sentenced Delawar Hossain Sayedee to imprisonment unto death for war crimes.

The first phase hartal will begin at 6:00am Thursday and end at 6:00am Friday and then second phase hartal will start at 6:00am Sunday and end at 6:00am Monday.

Following the verdict on Sayedee, Jamaat acting ameer Moqbul Ahmed and acting secretary general Shafiqur Rahman, in a press release, made the announcement on Wednesday.

The party will arrange doa mahfil for Sayedee on Friday and countrywide demonstration on Saturday, the release added.

Earlier in the morning, the apex court commuted the death sentence of Sayedee in 2 charges of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War differing the International Crimes Tribunal’s sentence of death penalty to him.
