2 cops hurt in clash with Jamaat

BOGRA: Two police officials were injured in a clash between activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and police in CO Office Bus stand area on Naogaon-Bogra road in Dupchachia upazila on Wednesday.

Riaz Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dupchachia Thana, told banglanews that the Jamaat activists threw brickbats on law enforcers when they prevented Jamaat men to stage rally in the area around 12:30pm.

In reply, police also opened fire seven rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control.

At least eight people, including two police constables, were also injured in the attack, the OC added.

Earlier, the Supreme Court handed down the final verdict of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee awarding him to imprisonment unto death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. 

A five-member judge’s panel of the apex court led-by Chief Justice Mozammel Hossain delivered verdict on the Wednesday in response to the appeals filed by Jamaat leader Sayedee.

Sayedee was involved in the incidents like killing, looting at Pararhat, raping of female and converting Hindu people into Muslims in Pirojpur area.
