Shibir activists vandalize 10 vehicles in N’ganj

NARAYANGANJ: Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, vandalized at least 10 vehicles here on Thursday morning during 24-hour hartal.

They, however, were also seen locked into clashes with police at that time after which the law enforcers detained one of them.

They made the rampage at the early hours of hartal, enforced by Jamaat protesting Supreme Court appeal verdict that sentenced Delawar Hossain Sayedee to imprisonment unto death for war crimes.

Witnesses said that Shibir men locked into clashes after police obstructed their procession at Golachipa area of the town.

Shibir men also threw brick-chips targeting the police after being interrupted, witnesses added. Police also charged batons at that time.

Witnesses further said, the agitated Shibir activists later vandalized the vehicles -- a covered-van, two CNG-run auto-rickshaws, a pickup van and some buses.

The Shibir men vandalized at least 10 vehicles at that time, they added.

Narayanganj Sadar Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manjurul Kader told banglanews that police dispersed them charging batons before being gathered.

“Moreover, we have detained one of them at that time,” he added.

Besides, a very few vehicles are moving in the town due to hartal while number of vehicles are also little on Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet highways.

Earlier on Wednesday, the apex court commuted the death sentence of Sayedee in 2 charges of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War differing the International Crimes Tribunal’s sentence of death penalty to him.
