Jamaat-shibir’s demo, vandalism in Sylhet

SYLHET: Leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its students’ wings Islami Chattra Shibir brought out brisk processions, vandalized vehicles here on Thursday morning moments after a 24-hour hartal commenced.

The party enforced a countrywide 24-hour hartal beginning from 6:00am Thursday protesting Supreme Court verdict that sentenced its Naib-e-Amir Delawar Hossain Sayedee to imprisonment unto death for war crimes.

Witnesses said Shibir men brought out precession in Ambarkhana area of the metropolitan around 6:30am and vandalized at least four trucks, parked beside roads, there.

Hartal supporters brought out another procession in Medical Road area at 7:00am, tried to picketing awhile there. Sensing lawmen’s presence, they left the scene.

Light vehicles and rickshaws were seen playing at different places. No bus of long-distance route left Kandamtali Bus Terminal, Train schedule remains normal.

Law enforcement agencies including members of police and Rapid Action Battalion are on alert to avoid any untoward incident. They have been seen patrolling on the city’s thoroughfares since the morning.

Border Guard Bangladesh and additional police forces have been deployed at the strategic intersections.

When asked Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner (media) Rahmat Ullah told banglanews, any untoward incidents reported nowhere.

The first phase of Jamaat’s hartal began from 6:00am on Thursday and will continue till 6:00am on Friday whereas the last phase will start at 6:00am on Sunday and continue till at 6:00 am on Monday.
