Jamaat 24-hr hartal begins Sunday

DHAKA: The final phase of 48-hour hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the verdict of war crimes convict Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee will begin 6:00am Sunday and continue till 6:00am Monday.

Acting Ameer of the party Moqbul Ahmed and acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the programs when the ICT handed down the verdict on Wednesday.

Jamaat observed the first phase of the hartal from 6:00am Thursday to 6:00am Friday.

On September 17, Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee was sentenced to imprisonment unto clinical death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

The Supreme Court handed down the final verdict differing verdict passed by International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) that awarded death penalty to Sayedee.

A five-member judge’s panel of the apex court led-by Chief Justice Mozammel Hossain delivered the verdict in response to the appeals filed by Jamaat leader Sayedee.
