CHITTAGONG: The Election Commission plans to replicate the Chittagong model in all local polls henceforth banning all kinds of showdown, as the restraints worked well in the port city.

“Any kind of gathering, including rally and procession, would be banned in all local-government elections, including City Corporation, Municipality and Union Parishad polls,” said Election Commissioner Shakawat Hossain.

He unveiled the plan while sharing opinions with candidates, their agents and journalists in the port city`s Circuit House Tuesday, a week ahead of the Chittagong City Corporation polls, set for June 17.

In order to curb mussle and money power in the CCC polls, the EC imposed a ban on grand rally and procession.

Besides, restrioctions on poster printing are expected from next UP elections, he said.

The commissioner alleged, “The CCC candidates are seen distributing money among the voters in many areas.”

Shakawat Hossain, however, hoped the attitude of CCC election candidates would stand out as instances for any local-government election in future.

"The candidates of CCC polls are more respectful to the poll code. It is hopeful that the candidates will maintain reasonable behaviours during and after election."
