Chittagong: As the countdown to June 17 voting began, the authorities Monday deployed army for policing the crucial Chittagong City Corporation polls.

Six companies comprising at least 600 members of the Army will be on duty as striking force till June 18, officials said.

Meanwhile, six temporary camps for the army troops have been set up in different areas, including one at Chittagong MA Aziz Stadium, wherefrom they would operate to maintain law and order ahead and during the lection as well as the day after the voting.

Two companies of BDR, which were deployed on June 9, will also be in the election field till June 18.

Banaj Kumar, deputy commissioner of CMP, told banglanews24.com.bd that the army has been deployed as striking force to keep vigilance on the port city, where the local election turned into a straight fight between two mayoral candidates backed by the ruling Awami League and the opposition BNP.

“They will go for any action necessary to maintain peace.”
