DHAKA: The High Court on Wednesday (December 5) granted bail for six months to Barrister Mainul Hosein in two defamation cases for defaming a journalist Masuda Bhatti on television talk show.
The court also sought documents of two cases - one in Rangpur and the other in Jamalpur hearing the petition seeking cancellation of the cases.
The HC bench of Justice Md. Rezaul Haque and Justice Zafar Ahmed also postponed the procedures of the cases.
Earlier on November 8, Barrister Mainul filed a petition to the HC seeking cancellation of the cases.
Mainul, a former adviser to the military-controlled caretaker government, was arrested from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rab’s Uttara residence in city on Monday night (October 22).
He was then taken to Detective Branch (DB) of DMP office in Dhaka for questioning.
A total of 22 cases were filed against Mainul Hosein across the country, including Rangpur and Jamalpur following his comment.
Mainul was involved in newly-formed political alliance Jatiya Oikyafront, which comprises BNP, Gono Forum, JSD (Rab) and Nagorik Oikya, launched on October 13.
Mainul’s appalling comment, about Masuda Bhatti on a talk show broadcast on October 16, triggered outrage in media.
