National polls aspirants get symbols, begin campaign

DHAKA: Returning officers across the country have been allocating electoral symbols among candidates of the 11th general election, slated for December 30.

Divisional Commissioner of Dhaka K M Ali Azam, returning officer of Dhaka, has started allocating symbols around 10am among candidates of Dhaka district and city at his Shegunbagicha office, opening the field for electioneering.

Additional Divisional Commissioner (general) Tariqul Islam declared the name of candidates and symbols have been handed over candidates of Dhaka-4 and Dhaka-5 constituencies or their representatives.

During symbol allocation, he urged candidates to start their campaign through abiding by electoral code of conduct.

In Dhaka-5 constituency, a total of 10 candidates got symbols to compete the national election. 

Of them, Habibur Rahman Molla will vie the election with boat, Awami League's electoral symbol, while Nabi Ullah with Sheaf of Paddy polls symbol of BNP and Mir Abdur Sabur Asud with Plough, poll symbol of Jatiya Party (Ershad). 

As per poll schedule, candidates can start their electioneering from Monday (December 10).

A sum of 272 aspirants will contest the upcoming parliamentary elections with 'Boat', while 298 candidates will vie the polls with 'Sheaf of Paddy'.

Of the 300 constituencies, Awami League gave its own candidates in 258 while gave 42 seats to the Grand Alliance partners.

AL shared 27 constituencies to the Jatiya Party while five to  Bangladesh Workers Party, three each to Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasod) and Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, two to Tarikat Federation, and one each to Jatiya party (JP-led by Manju) and Bangladesh Federation.

BNP gave 58 seats to its partners from the Jatiya Oikyafront and the 20-party alliances and nominated its own candidates in 242 constituencies.
