DHAKA: There is no possible legal way of barring 25 Jamaat-e-Islami candidates from participating in the 11th parliamentary elections, by cancelling their candidature.
Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed made the disclosure at a press briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban Sunday (Dec 23) night.
Prior to the briefing, the EC held a meeting on various matters revolving the elections including candidacy of the Jamaat men.
Despite scrapping of registration as a political party, 25 of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders are contesting the upcoming national elections.
22 of them will seek vote for BNP’s voting symbol ‘paddy sheaf’ and the rest 3 are independent candidates.
The High Court earlier issued a rule challenging legality of their candidacy. The EC was directed to settle the matter.
