DHAKA: A chase and counter-chase took place between the supporters of Moha Jote candidate Abu Hossain Babla and Oikyafront candidate Salah Uddin Ahmed during their election rallies in Shyampur of the capital city Tuesday (Dec 25).

Six BNP men were reported to be detained in the incident.

Witnesses said an election rally of Salah Uddin took confrontational position with another rally of opposing candidate Babla, in front of Shyampur Laal Mosque around 11am.

At one stage, activists of both the groups start chasing each other.

Police went to the scene and calmed the situation.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Shyampur Zone Assistant Commissioner (AC) Faisal Mahmud said six persons were nabbed from the spot.

Opposition alliance Jatiya Oikyafront candidate Salah Uddin said the supporters of ‘plough’ symbol carried out attack on his campaigners with no incitation from anyone and upon ‘encouragement of police.’

He claimed that several of his followers sustained injuries.
