KUSHTIA: An activist of Awami League was killed in a clash among two rival groups over establishing supremacy in Abdalpur area of Kushtia sadar upazila at early hours of Sunday (Jan 5).

The deceased was identified as Moinuddin Biswas, father of Islamic University (Kushtia) Chhatra League unit General Secretary Jewel Rana Halim. 

Police and local sources said several hundred men led by Abdalpur union unit Awami League General Secretary Golam Mostofa carried out an attack at the residence of the UP Chairman Ali Haider Swapon, over longstanding rivalry.

The chairman’s aide Moinuddin Biswas and his followers tried to resist the attackers.

At one stage, Moinuddin was stabbed by the attackers.

He was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the physicians.

Kushtia Superintendent of Police (SP) SM Tanvir Arafat and other police officials visited the spot, following the incident.

Policemen were deployed to calm the tension in the locality, said the SP.
