DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Sunday (Jan 6) sent former minister Nazmul Huda to jail on Tk 2.4 crore bribery charges.
Dhaka Special Judge Court-2 Judge HM Ruhul Imran passed the order after he surrendered before the court.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Md Shariful Islam filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station accusing Nazmul Huda and his wife Sigma Huda on March 21, 2007.
The couple were charged with taking Tk 2.4 crore as bribe from one Meer Jaher Hossain.
Nazmul was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment and fined Tk 2.5 crore and his wife 3 years of imprisonment, in a Dhaka special judge court order.
Afterwards, the couple were acquitted by the High Court on March 20, 2011.
A rehearing of the case was held at the High Court following appeal by the ACC.
Afterwards, an HC bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singh and Justice Mustafa Zaman lessened the punishment to four years for Nazmul.
Besides, the court also counted Sigma Huda’s stay behind bars as punishment.
As per the court direction, Nazmul Huda surrendered before the court on Sunday.
