DHAKA: Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has approved Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad as leader of the opposition in parliament.

She on Thursday (Jan 10) also approved GM Quader, co-chairman of JP, as the deputy leader of the opposition, said sources of the parliament secretariat.

Jatiya Party, one of the key allies of the ruling Awami League, has come out as the second largest party in parliament, securing 22 seats in the 11th parliamentary election.

Earlier on Jan 9, the Parliament Secretariat published a gazette naming Jatiya Party (JP) chairman HM Ershad as leader of the opposition and co-chairman of JP GM Quader as deputy leader of the opposition in the 11th Parliament

Joynal Abedin, director (PR) at the Parliament Secretariat, confirmed the news agency about the gazette notification.

Earlier, the Jatiya Party in its parliamentary meeting decided to play role in parliament as the main opposition.

In that meeting, the JP decided to make HM Ershad opposition leader and GM Quader deputy leader. A resolution in this regard was handed over to Speaker for her consideration.
