DHAKA: Awami League candidate Dr Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi, sister of late Syed Ashraful Islam, has been elected uncontested in the re-election of Kishoreganj-1 constituency.
After expiry of nomination withdrawal deadline, Returning Officer Md Sarwar Morshed Chowdhury, also Kishoreganj deputy commissioner (DC), made the announcement at his office on Sunday (Feb 10) evening
As two other candidates -- Mostaeen Billah of Jatiya Party and Bhupendra Chandra Bhowmik Dolon of Ganatantri Party--- quit the race, Dr Zakia has been declared winner in the parliamentary seat.
Ganatantri Party candidate Bhupendra Chandra Bhowmik Dolon withdrew his candidacy from the reelection around 4:45pm today while Jatiya Party candidate Md Mostaeen Billah withdrew his candidacy on Saturday (Feb 9).
Dr Zakia Noor is daughter of Syed Nazrul Islam, the acting President of Bangladesh during the Liberation War, and younger sister of late Syed Ashraf.
As per the schedule, the voting to Kishoreganj-1 constituency will be held on February 28, the last date for submission of nomination paper had been fixed January 31, while nomination scrutiny on February 3 and last date for nomination withdrawal on February 10.
The constituency fell vacant after the death of former Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam. He was reelected MP in the December 30 national election. But he could not take oath due to illness and sought time to the Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for oath.
