DHAKA: Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Monday (Feb 18) urged law enforcement agencies to perform their duties neutrally to ensure fair election in both the Dhaka City Corporations.
He gave the directive at a coordination meeting with the law enforcement agencies ahead of the upcoming elections in Dhaka South and North City Corporations (DSCC & DNCC) at the Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in the city.
Describing the role of law enforcement agencies the vital to ensure a fair and acceptable election, he said, “Security of the voters and agents of different political parties must be ensured. Police should perform their duties neutrally for making the election unquestionable.”
The CEC also lauded the role of police in curbing violence during the 11th parliamentary election and asked them to discharge the same kind of duties in the upcoming elections in Dhaka cities and upazila councils.
Regarding boycotting the elections by some parties, including BNP, the CEC said we can’t do anything if all parties do not contest in the elections.
But, the election will be competitive, the CEC hoped.
The by-elections to Dhaka North City Corporation will be held on February 28. Besides, elections in 18 newly formed wards in DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) each will be held on the same day.
