DHAKA: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said not the Election Commission (EC) but the candidates and political parties are responsible for low turnout of voters in the ongoing polls to two Dhaka city corporations Thursday (Feb 28).
“The EC creates the voting environment. It doesn’t bring voters (to the polling centers). Therefore, the liability of low voter turnout in today’s two city corporation polls doesn’t go to the EC. The liability goes to the candidates and the political parties,” he said.
The CEC was talking to the reporters after casting his ballot in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-elections, at IES School & College in Uttara.
Returning Officer Abul Kashem accompanied him.
“We can only create the atmosphere for voting. We cannot go to the voters’ homes for bringing them to the centers. The liability of voters’ absence goes to the candidates and the political parties,” KM Nurul Huda said further.
The CEC also blamed adverse weather to play role for low turnout of voters to the DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) polls Thursday.
