EC to halt Upazila elections if situation worsens

MADARIPUR: Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Ret) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury has ordered the Returning Officer to halt voting in the whole upazila, not only in the center concerned if the situation is bad.

He was addressing a meeting at the conference room of Madaripur deputy commissioner on Thursday (March 21) on law and order management in four Upazilas of the district.

Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury also said that the Election Commission (EC) will not tolerate any irregularities. If anybody breaks the electoral code of conduct, EC will not dither to take action against them. 

He urged the administration to remain vigilant about any kind of sabotage, terrorism centering the upazila elections.

The Election Commissioner also sought cooperation of all, including local MPs and ministers to check the misuse the power ahead of the election.

The 3rd phase of the 5th upazila parishad elections will be held in 120 upazilas under 25 districts on Sunday (March 24). 

The government has already appointed 105 executive magistrates to run mobile court aiming to thwart irregularities for the 3rd phase upazila polls.
