A newly elected member of Laxmipur union parishad was allegedly hacked to death in Gobindapur village of Sadar upazila on Friday night.

Deceased Md Abdur Rouf Mia, 45, was the newly elected UP member of Ward no.1 under the union. He was also a senior teacher at Laxmipur School and College.

According to locals, Abdur Rauf was going to visit his friend Ruhul Amin's house at about 10:30pm by a motorcycle. When he reached at Gobindapur village, some unidentified persons beat up and hit him on the head with rods, leaving him severely injured, they added.

They rescued him and took him to Gaibandha General Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Gaibandha Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Abdur Rauf said the UP might be killed as an election violence. Legal action was being taken in this regard, he added.
