Shaheed Dr Milon Day is being observed on Saturday with due respect commemorating the 31st martyrdom anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon during the anti-autocratic movement in 1990.
Leaders and activists of Awami League paid tributes to Shaheed Milon by placing wreaths at his grave on Dhaka Medical College campus and Dr Milon Monument at Dhaka University, marking the day.
Besides, they recited Fateha, and special munajat at the tomb of Milon at Dhaka Medical College around 8 am.
Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, said: "The sacrifice of Shaheed Dr Milon is a glorious milestone in our history. Our long-cherished democracy was set free in exchange of his blood, along with the tough movement waged under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina."
But it is true that democracy is yet to get an institutional shape fully. It needs more time and also the unity of the democratic forces, he added.
Dr Milon was killed by the assailants of the military junta near the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University during the anti-autocracy movement on November 27, 1990.
With the supreme sacrifice of Dr Milon, the anti-authoritarian movement went to peak and the fall of the dictator-ruled government took place through a historical student mass uprising.
