The High Court (HC) on Thursday (Feb 10) published the full text of its judgment that upheld a lower court verdict, sentencing Haji Mohammad Selim MP to 10-year imprisonment in a graft case.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq passed the judgment on 9 March, 2021, upholding the jail term and fine of Tk10 lakh for the lawmaker.
The court, however, scrapped the trial court verdict of an additional three-year jail term for concealing information regarding his wealth.
The High Court in its judgment had asked the accused to surrender before the lower court concerned within 30 days of receiving the copy of the judgment.
Meanwhile, Haji Selim’s counsel Syed Ahmed Raja said they will challenge the verdict in the Appellate Division.
In 2008, Selim was sentenced to 10 years in jail with a Tk10 lakh fine in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission during the 2007 caretaker government.
The ACC accused the lawmaker of amassing wealth worth Tk 14.65 crore beyond known sources of his income.
