Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be deployed from May 15 ahead of Cumilla City Corporation elections to be held on June 15, said Election Commission (EC) Joint Secretary SM Asaduzzaman on Tuesday (May 10).
They will work with local law enforcement officers to maintain security and ensure a peaceful polling environment during the elections, he said, adding that three executive magistrates will be working in the area from May 12.
According to the EC, law enforcement officers and the administration have taken various steps to ensure a peaceful environment and prevent any kind of "showdown."
Moreover, as of Monday, law enforcement agencies have fined 209 motorcyclists Tk5,76,000, the EC said.
On April 25, the Election Commission announced the polls’ schedule for the Comilla City Corporation as well as six municipalities and 135 union parishads.
The deadline for filing nominations is May 17. Officials will verify the documents on May 19, and aspirants will get until May 26 to pull out from the races. Polls symbols will be allotted to candidates on May 27.
Balloting in Comilla city, six municipalities and the 135 union parishads will be held through electronic voting machines (EVMs).
