Protesting the price hike of essential commodities, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday (June 7) demanded the cancelation of the government's decision of increasing gas prices.
Besides, the party also announced a three-day demonstration programme in protest against the fresh hike in gas prices.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with the announcement at a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Tuesday.
The party’s general secretary also announced a three-day protest at all metropolitan areas, including Dhaka, on June 9, at district headquarters on June 11, and at the upazila level on June 13, against the price hike of the essential commodities, and gas.
Mirza Fakhrul further said that their party’s all associate bodies will also stage demonstrations to mount pressure on the government to revoke the gas price hike decision and control the prices of essential commodities.
Earlier on June 5, the price of residential gas for two stoves increased to Tk 1,080 from Tk 975 while the price for one burner increased to Tk 990 from Tk 925.
The announcement was made by Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Technical Committee Chairman Mohammad Abu Farooq at a press conference in Dhaka on June 05.
