BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was admitted to a hospital in the capital with cardiac problem early Saturday.

She was taken to the coronary care unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital around 3:20am.

Khaleda Zia is under the care of cardiologist Dr Shahabuddin Talukder, who has been looking after Khaleda's treatment.

Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed the matter.

He said: “I came to know that Khaleda Zia was feeling sick. She must be taken to the hospital immediately. Cardiac physician suggested taking necessary measures. After receiving the information, I talked to the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zobaida Rahman. And it was decided to take Khaleda Zia to the hospital.”

Fakhrul also said after some tests, the doctors found that she has cardiac problems. "How complicated her problem is can be confirmed after she undergoes different tests, especially an angiogram," he said.

A medical board will analyse Khaleda's condition and reports at 10:30am Saturday and decide the next course of treatment, he added.

Fakhrul Islam urged the country’s people to pray for her speedy recovery.

The party chief had a ‘routine’ health check-up at the private hospital on April 6.

Khaleda Zia has been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung and eye problems.
