The Jatiya Party (JAPA) Chairman and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Parliament GM Quader termed railway crossings in the country as death traps.
The former minister said this in a statement sent to the media on Saturday (July 30).
He said railway travel is considered safe all over the world, but it has become a matter of fear in Bangladesh.
GM Quader said that according to reports published in the media, about 82 percent of the railway crossings in the country are unprotected. These unprotected railway crossings have no guards and no barriers.
There is no one to see the negligence and mismanagement of the railway department, he said.
Investigation committee is formed following every accident, but the reports are unknown to the countrymen. No one knows what measures the government is taking to prevent accidents occurring in the country, said Quader
Death toll on the railways cannot be accepted, he said, adding: "Rail accidents in modern times prove how backdated we are."
The JAPA chairman said it has become necessary to take necessary measures now to secure the railways of the country.
