BNP not to celebrate Khaleda Zia’s birthday  Khaleda Zia

Bangladesh Nationalisy Party (BNP) will not celebrate its Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s 77th birthday on August 15. 

The party will not arrange any programme, except doa mahfil seeking long life and early recovery of ailing Khaleda Zia, on the occasion of her birthday.

BNP senior joint secretary-general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Sunday made the announcement at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

He said they would hold doa mahfils at all city, district, upazila and thana units over the country on August 16 (Tuesday). 

On February 8, 2018, the former prime minister was sent to the Old Dhaka Central Jail as a lower court sentenced her to five years imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.  

Later, on March 25, 2020, the government temporarily freed Khaleda from jail during the Covid-19 pandemic, through an executive order suspending her sentence with conditions that she will stay at her Gulshan home and not leave the country.

Khaleda Zia’s doctor claimed that she has been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung and eye problems. The leaders, activist demanded that the party chief needs better treatment in abroad.

Khaleda Zia was born to Iskandar Majumder and Taiyaba Majumder on August 15, 1945, in Dinajpur district. She is the fourth among her four sisters and two brothers.
