Suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mohammad Jahangir Alam was granted anticipatory bail in seven cases filed with different police stations in the country.
A source from the High Court bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Salim confirmed the matter on Monday.
On November 19 last year, mayor Zahangir Alam, also Gazipur Metropolitan Unit Awami League general secretary, was expelled from the ruling party.
On October 4 of that year, the AL central committee issued a show-cause notice on Zahangir over his controversial comments on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the number of martyred freedom fighters.
Zahangir at a programme made some comments about Bangabandhu and questioned the actual number of martyred freedom fighters, and the video of the comments went viral.
Later, a number of cases were filed against him in different parts of the country in this connection.
Meanwhile, Jahangir Alam appealed to the High Court against the party's suspension order.
