The 18th death anniversary of Ivy Rahman, former president of Mahila Awami League, is being observed today (August 24).
Ivy Rahman, wife of former president Zillur Rahman, received grievous injuries during a grisly grenade attack on Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21 in 2004 at an Awami League peace rally in protest against the acts of militancy and violence during then Bangladesh Nationalist Party-Jamaat-e-Islami led four party clique government.
In the grenade blast, 22 Awami League leaders, including Ivy Rahman were killed and over 400 were injured.
Due to the blast, Ivy Rahman’s legs were blown off and she was taken to Dhaka’s Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
Ivy Rahman was declared dead shortly after visit of then prime minister Khaleda Zia.
To mark the day, different political and socio-cultural organisations, including Awami League, its associate bodies and other likeminded organisations have chalked elaborate programmes.
The programmes include, placing of floral wreaths and offering fateha at her grave at Banani graveyard.
Milad mahfil, special prayers and holding discussions will be held in the capital and elsewhere across the country marking the day.
Leaders of Awami League and its associate bodies will pay rich tributes to Ivy Rahman, also former president of Bangladesh Mahila Samity, by placing wreaths at her grave in the morning.
They will also offer fateha and doa seeking eternal peace of her departed soul.
Family members of Ivy will arrange Milad and Doa-mahfil at her Gulshan residence in the city. They urged all members of AL and its associate bodies to attend the programmes.
